Using the RSS News Feeds

RSS (Really Simple Syndication) Support

CCS Retail Systems maintains several Employee Blogs that have direct and FeedBurner RSS feed links . This provides a convenient way for you to let your browser or news reader keep track of new articles for you.  You subscribe to the feed on the website with your browser, and then the browser or reader requests updates from the feed when it is started and periodically there after.  You can set the frequency of the updates on a per feed basis with your browser.

NOTE: Newsfeeds are intended for Blog syndication primarily.   We only offer news feeds on our Blogs and Home page to reduce the complexity of our system.  Our Home page is really a Blog format.  On other pages IE 8 or 9 users can look for the  Webslices Green Icon in their Browser Toolbar.

With newsfeeds you can optionally view the changes to the pages you subscribe to without visiting the site, or use the RSS updates as triggers when to revisit the site with the URLs they include.  In Internet Explorer 8 and up you can use the Web Slices feature to alert you of changes also.   See our Web Slices article in this Blog

Subscribing To News Feeds

If you are not familiar with RSS, it is a Service that Websites like CCS Retail Systems can provide for its visitors to get an automatic digest style of article summaries for a Web page or Blog.  The webmaster can subscribe to an aggregation service like Google FeedBurner to enhance this service.  The aggregator forwards a summary of available documents to your browser for the feeds you subscribe to on the website.

At CCS we use the ATOM 1.0 feed format and the RSS 2.0 format.   We recommend ATOM, it gives you more flexibility and features for the content.   Our aggregator is Google FeedBurner, it supports both formats.  For more details visit Wikipedia.

Here are the steps for you to perform to setup the CCS FeedBurner newsfeeds in your Browser.  The procedure to use your News Reader is analogous but a bit shorter.   If you do not wish to use the advanced features of FeedBurner, you can use your Browser Toolbar Orange Icon to register the newsfeed directly and ignore the following section.

CCS Newsfeed Subscription

  1. Browse to the CCS Retail website page you want to monitor with an RSS feed.
  2. Find the orange RSS subscribe to FeedBurner Icon on the page.  This is usually at the top right on the page.
  3. Click the Icon to start the feed subscription process.
  4. For CCS Retail compatibility with FeedBurner, next select the View Feed XML option at the bottom of the "Subscribe Now box" on the top right.  DO NOT click the article links yet.  FeedBurner does not recognize them yet.
  5. The page now shown has active links in a digest format that permit viewing the articles   To add this feed to your browser, click the Subscribe to this feed link near the top of the page.
  6. A pop-up window appears that allows accepting the subscription.
  7. To configure the feed link further right click it in your left column feed list and use the properties link.

This Section of our site offers advice, information resources, and itemizes the most Critical Malware Alerts we find in the Alerts and Warning services we subscribe to.   Our intent is to help in the ways we can with the security of our Customers systems.  This is NOT a complete list of Malware by any means.   Please check here ONLY as a supplemental source to your primary sources.

You may want to review our Spam Notification sites.  Spam is a disabling nuisance to your operations,  Using the filtering tools in your Networking Software and Email Clients can help bounce spammers or put their mail in junk folders.  The links listed point to companies and organizations that help identify spammers for you to handle as you need to.  If you find your company on these lists by mistake, there are links to help get it removed.  If removal is difficult contact CCS Retail Support, we can try to help.

Critical Alerts Blog Check the New Critical Alerts Blog for New Malware threats.

The best approach is to have a well-balanced and complete strategic plan to combat Malware that attempts to compromise your systems.  We suggest the following steps be taken

  • Use a Resident Malware Protection program for your desktops and servers as primary protection.  For Windows we suggest AVG as good protection and low overhead.
  • Use spamassassin and other scanners for your Linux and UNIX servers.  We have a list of the most helpful tools and deployment experience. (See below)
  • Use several alternative non-resident Malware scanners on a periodic basis as secondary protection.  We can recommend some products for you.  (See below)
  • Subscribe to Malware Bulletin news links and use alert services such as our service and Google Alerts. (See below)
  • Have a written plan that describes what to do if your operations become infected.  Make sure your staff knows how to look for potential infections, what to do if an infection is suspected, and what to do to minimized the spread of a confirmed infection.
  • Keep some CCS Support hours available for emergency help from CCS Retail.

If you need help putting your plan together contact your CCS Support Technician or Sales Consultant.

Check if Your Account has been Hacked – pwnedlist.com

I’m sure we all live in a world where we assume our accounts are all safe as long as we can still use them regularly. Same goes for our banking account, as long as the amount does not disappear suddenly, we will assume our account is safe.

What if I were to tell you that your account is already hacked and someone knows your username and password? By having these two criteria, it is sufficient to enter into sites like Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, Paypal, and many more to try out your username and password combination.

I’m sure today with every one of us holding at least 5 online accounts, we share the same username and password between accounts. If you are one of those, you are at the right place for today I am going to share with you a site where you can check whether your account is hacked or compromised.

Pwnedlist.com is a creation of two security researchers Alen Puzic and Jasiel Spelman from DVLabs, a division of HP/TippingPoint. What you need to do over there is to enter the username or email address (not the password) which you usually used to login into any online websites and hit the Check button. In just seconds, the result will be shown whether your account is compromised or not.

You can find the sites with Google.  Many of these vendors have non-commercial versions or trial versions.  Non–commercial versions are not suitable for resident, online protection.  Use them for secondary, periodic scans.

FeedBurner 404 Errors

I get a 404 error when trying to link to CCS Pages from my CCS FeedBurner page.  This seems to be a problem with Google FeedBurner.  Some page links are correctly redirected with feedproxy by FeddBurner and some are not.  Since FeedBurner is a new property for Google at this point, we suspect this problem will go away over time.

The work around is to use the View XML link in the box at the top right.  Those links will correctly link to CCS.

PREPARATION STEP  (Printing instructions:  use a custom size of 12 x 12 or similar) NOTES
Review the content of the CD/DVD release notes for All the systems involved.  Consider making a copy of any checklists they contain for your notes. Have the Media available during the upgrade, as well.
Make sure you have a Backup completed and verified before starting.
Make sure you have someone who can thoroughly test the update and confirm its operation.
Plan for Physical security and environmental factors: Access, Power, Monitoring Company awareness.
Have a Voice line and Internet access in the area you will be using for the upgrade.
Have any other Materials needed available. e.g. blank media, USB devices, other peripherals.
Get the latest CounterPoint Release CD or DVD.   Check the media is OK and your drive reads it.
Get all the latest Service Pack File(s).  This may include your Operating Systems and Database as well.
Get the License Key(s) for the version of all the Software you plan to install.  Make sure it is legible and you understand the characters. Confirm  the values, and perhaps add a Phonetic Spelling in your notes for later.
Review the Operating system, Utility, and CounterPoint Logins and Passwords for administrators and users you will need. Write these down and Verify/Test them before starting.
Review the Logins and Passwords for any other add-on applications you need, such as Focus Service Manager, and Payroll For CounterPoint. Write these down and Verify/Test them as well.
If you have any customizations, have they been retrofitted and tested first?
Do you have enough time to make a proper backup and do the update work before your users need to be back on the system?  It is recommended that you do this after the close of business not first thing before you open,  The former gives you about 16 hours to resolve problems or decide to punt.  The latter usually gives you 30 to 60 minutes to do the same. The choice is clear.
If you need to request CCS support assistance is it scheduled?  We need at least 48 hours warning
Put you plan in a schedule by half hour increments.  Does it work within the time you have alotted for the upgrade?  IF NOT FIX IT NOW.  You don’t want to be standing there frustrated when the employees start to arrive!

Starting Off on the Right Track with the Radiant Solution
Congratulations to CCS Retail Systems
for closing a CounterPoint SQL system for a start-up company in the health, beauty and weight loss industry. The lead was closed by CCS Retail Systems in less than a month after receiving it from Radiant!  The company purchased the complete Radiant Retail Solution: CounterPoint SQL, CPOnline, CPGateway, and Radiant Payment Services. They will be adding Radiant hardware (1520) prior to the opening of the brick-and-mortar store.

Why the Radiant Solution?
This retailer was in the market for an ecommerce solution that would allow them to eventually grow into a brick-and-mortar store. Enter CPOnline – the perfect fit.  Using CounterPoint SQL to manage her inventory and CPOnline as the shopping cart solution, the technology puzzle was solved. With the vision of being first an ecommerce site and second a brick-and-mortar, the design of the company website was of utmost importance. The owner turned to the CPOnline services team for a website Design Package and SEM consultation. The CPOnline Design Package gave the retailer one-on-one sessions with experts that aided the user in designing and launching a unique site. Radiant was able to meet each of their needs as a small, start-up with plans for growth.

The Radiant Solution and CSS Retail Systems beat the competition (Celerant & Suite Spot Commerce) based on the feature rich functionality set and ease of CPOnline coupled with integrated store systems (CounterPoint SQL).  The customer received an end-to-end, scalable technology solution and expert services from a single vendor.

American Recovery and Reinvestment Act

"American Recovery and Reinvestment Act has officially extended the Section 179 Tax Deduction increases for the 2015 Tax Year"

Section 179 can be extremely profitable to you, so it is to your benefit to learn as much as possible. To begin, you probably have a lot of questions regarding Section 179. Follow the links below to get the details on this opportunity:

They’ll answer all of these questions, and make certain that you come away with all the knowledge you need to make smart business decisions in 2015 regarding equipment purchasing and Section 179 (if you’ve been thinking about buying or leasing new equipment, 2015 IS THE YEAR TO DO IT, due to changes in Section 179 made by the Economic Stimulus Act of 2008 and extended by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015)  The graphic below is out of date.  Visit the government site with the links on this page!

Free Tools that Make Calculating Section 179 Deductions Simple

Section 179 is really very simple – you buy or lease qualifying equipment, and then take a full tax deduction on it this year (also, there are a few other things, which we’ll go over, but in a nutshell, that’s the idea.) To give you an estimate of how much money you can save, use the Section 179 Deduction Calculator to make computing Section 179 deductions simple, and look at the changes in Section 179 due to the Economic Stimulus Act of 2008 that have been extended by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act for the 2013 Tax Year.

NEWS ALERT: Jan, 2013

Section 179 has been extended to cover the tax year 2013 as a consequence of the Fiscal Cliff negotiations.   Be sure to take advantage of this opportunity to reduce your acquisition costs for equipment.

NEWS ALERT: Feb 25, 2011

Two congressional acts affecting Section 179 in a positive way for this 2011 tax year passed in late 2010 (The Tax Relief Act of 2010 and The Jobs Act of 2010). The newest changes are as follows:

The Section 179 Deduction limit was increased to $500,000. The total amount of equipment that can be purchased was increased to $2 million. This includes most new and used capital equipment, and also includes software.

The "Bonus Depreciation" was increased to 100% on qualified assets. However, this can be taken on new equipment only.

When applying these provisions, Section 179 is generally taken first, followed by Bonus Depreciation – unless the business has no taxable profit in 2011.

Also, many businesses find Section 179 Qualified Financing to be an attractive option in 2011.

Successful businesses take advantage of legal tax incentives to help lower their operating costs. The Section 179 Deduction is a tax incentive that is easy to use, and gives businesses an incentive to invest in themselves. In short, taking advantage of the Section 179 Deduction will help your business keep more capital, while also getting needed equipment
