MS Office 15 to support ODF 1.2
Microsoft has recently indicated that it plans to support the Open Document Format (ODF) 1.2 in both "MS Office 15" and in it’s cloud office suite "Office 365".
ODF is the native document format of both "OpenOffice.org 3" and "LibreOffice 3". The OpenDoc Society which created and promoted this standard, was once a bitter rival of Microsoft. ODF was created and promoted at a time when Microsoft was promoting it’s own OOXML as an international standard. One of the biggest issues with this fight was with potential of documents being created in a software program that might later become unreadable or inaccessible in newer programs.
Throughout Microsoft’s history, there have been issues with new software releases that would not read older formats of files from it’s earlier releases of it’s own products. In many cases it took years before document conversion programs were made available.
Does anyone remember such programs as RWORD, Multiplan, and VisiCalc?
