Unconventional uses for Google Earth…

Recently, a Florida Panhandle deputy sheriff was able to track down and arrest a man on charges of illegally dumping of a boat near his home with a surprising tool…

Google Earth… has archived satellite and aerial images of communities across the world.  After finding an 18-foot boat dumped in an undeveloped subdivision about 15 miles north of Pensacola, the deputy too a look at past images of the surrounding area and saw a fuzzy image of the same vessel at a nearby home.

Authorities indicated that when the homeowner was confronted, he admitted dumping the boat and had his son later remove it.

Police say it cost $18 to dispose of the boat at a landfill. However, the illegal dumper, now faces a $5,000 fine and up to five years in prison for the offense.
