Was Black Friday As Successful As Predicted?

Black Friday Starts Holiday Shopping With A Bang

Thanksgiving is over, and so is the Black Friday weekend that actually started on Thursday. National Retail Federation reports that its BIGinsight survey conducted over the weekend shows that the early promotions won over millions of holiday shoppers – a huge success!

Up from 226 million last year, 247 million shoppers visited stores and websites over the Black Friday weekend, spending an average of $423. This amount topped last year’s spending average of $398. The survey indicated that 28.0 percent of weekend shoppers were at the stores by midnight on Black Friday, up from 24.4 percent from last year.

Online stores also profited from promotions. The average shopper spent $172.42, approximately 40.7 percent of the holiday budget online. Consumers doing research and price comparisons online to get the best deal helped online retailers, but did not thwart increasing shopper traffic at department, discount and clothing stores.

A significant trend, fueled by deep discounts and practical consumer spending habits, is that many shoppers bought gifts not only for others but “self-gifts” as well.   Eight out of ten shoppers reported buying non-gift items because of retailers’ weekend promotions.

Will the holiday shopping frenzy continue through the remainder of the season? According to NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay, it just might. He says:

“To keep their customers excited about holiday shopping, retailers will continue

to offer attractive promotions through December, and provide strong consumer

value with low prices, enhanced mobile and online offerings, and unique product

            assortment.”
