Gift Cards May Be Season’s Hottest Gift
National Retail Federation’s Holiday Consumer Spending Survey conducted by BIGinsight was recently released. The survey, designed to predict consumer behaviors and shopping trends relating to the winter holidays, shows that shoppers plan to spend more than ever before on gift cards.
Of the 9,383 consumers polled, 81.1% said that they plan to purchase at least one gift card. Men plan to spend significantly more on gift cards than women, an average of $172.98 as compared to $141.66 for women. The average amount expected to be spent per person is $156.86, the highest amount in the survey’s 10-year history. And why not? Gift cards are flexible, convenient, can be personalized, and can even be delivered. They provide a perfect and practical gift for the recipient to be used for something wanted or needed, and the giver doesn’t have to worry about whether he/she made a good choice.
Popular types of cards expected to be purchased for the season include the following:
- · For an online merchant (11.2%)
- · For a coffee shop (18.1%)
- · For a department store (39.1%)
- · For a book store (20.8%)
- · For grocery/gasoline stores (12.6%)
- · For a discount store (14.2%)
- · For a restaurant (33.3%)
