A Lucrative Black Friday Anticipated By Retailers
Optimism prevails for the official opening of the Holiday Season—Black Friday. “Night owls” will be competing with “early birds” as stores change their normal Black Friday hours in an attempt to bring in as many customers as possible, as early as possible. For the first year ever, for many retailers, Black Friday will begin not on Friday after Thanksgiving, but on Thanksgiving Day.
Big box giants like Walmart and Kohl’s announced earlier that they would be opening at 9 P.M. on Thursday evening. On Monday, Target Corp. announced that they will join the ranks. Sears will be opening at 8 P.M. on Thanksgiving Day, and virtually every national retailer will be open by at least 7 A.M. on Friday, following the trend to get everyone in for an earlier start on holiday shopping.
For many customers, it’s about the excitement of the hunt, and it doesn’t matter how early or how late the stores open. For retailers, the question is whether earlier openings will increase sales or just shuffle the dollars around over a longer period of time.
Retailers will need to know who their best customers are so that the Thanksgiving week flyers and emails can be sent to those who are most likely to take advantage of the sales being offered.
