Predictions for Father’s Day Spending

Good News for Retailers

Traditionally, consumer spending for gifts for Mother’s Day has outdistanced spending for Father’s Day, but the gap is closing!  The latest survey conducted by BIGinsight for National Retail Federation predicts that the average person will spend $117.14 on dad’s gifts this year, up from last year’s $106.49.  Total spending for Father’s Day may reach $12.7 billion!

In anticipation of the event, retailers are expected to have specials on everything from backyard grills to gardening tools.   Special outings like golf or a sporting event will be high on the list of gift-giving options, with $2.3 billion in spending predicted for this year compared to $2.0 billion spent last year in these categories.

Other purchases anticipated will be for electronics ($1.7 billion, up from $1.3 billion last year), and apparel ($1.7 billion, up from $1.4 billion last year). In addition, gift card purchases will bring in $1.7 billion, sporting goods $641 million, and books or music $645 million.

Interestingly, the survey found that consumers are likely to consider a variety of types of dads for gift-giving on Father’s Day.  Fathers and stepfathers, husbands, sons, grandfathers, brothers, and friends are likely to be gifted on this special day as a “thank you” for their support.

Of those consumers who own a tablet, 25.2% will use it to make a purchase for this holiday.  Half of those who own a tablet will use their device to research gift ideas, compare prices, locate stores, and redeem coupons. When it comes to smartphone users, one in ten is expected to make a purchase via their smartphone, but 26.7% will use it to research gift ideas and compare prices prior to buying.
