Has Your System been Hacked?
I recently worked with a couple of customers who had their systems hacked into. We had not done the Network Security Audit we offer for either of them. In checking their systems, I was again reminded that many people do not have adequate protection in place.
In the first case, the server that was attacked did not even have anti-virus installed on it. This server, was either hacked directly, or possibly via a drive-by download. The result was that the server was sending out spam messages, and the legitimate email from this site ended up being blocked by several anti-spam blacklist sites.
In the second case, the firewall was allowing outside access via remote desktop, plus the passwords were weak. In this case, the administrator password had been changed, and the security logging had been turned off to hide what changes had been made.
Both of these were found relatively quickly, because the users reported it when they saw some operations different. Emails being bounced that should not be, and scheduled processes not running, in these two cases. Those are two major flags that something is amiss.
In this day, if you notice anything at all different about how your system is operating, you should be suspicious.
