CounterPoint – Restricting Credit Card Types
This is a big issue for some businesses, we have seen a recent increase in the number of end-users taking Credit Cards that are invalid due to one or more of the following reasons:
-
Credit Card types that the Merchant Account account is not authorized to take.
-
Gift Cards with Visa/MasterCard/American Express Logo’s that are not true Credit Cards, and may only be used a specific store or shopping mall.
-
Bank ATM Cards, which like Debit Cards, require a Pin number in order to be settled.
-
Credit Cards that are only authorized for use in other countries, or on processing networks not supported in the US or Canada.
-
Fake Credit Cards that look and feel like the real thing, but have either invalid card numbers, or stolen card numbers gained by credit card skimming, or phishing techniques.
Here’s just one recent example of this:
A end-user at one of our customer sites took a card type that was not valid for their current Merchant Account configuration. They had not configured CounterPoint to restrict card types for specific pay codes. The end user was allowed to input a transaction, and force the input of a manual authorization using a bogus authorization code to complete the transaction.
This was a combination of an Operations Issue and a Training Issue
Whether you are using CounterPoint Version 7.5 or Counterpoint SQL, you may not be aware that your software has the capability to restrict credit card types by pay code.
If you want to make sure that your software is optimally configured for your situation, or your staff needs more training, please call the CCS Retail Systems Support Department.
