About the Trustworthiness of Websites

A new study from The Online Trust Alliance, an Internet advocacy group, reports that only 8% of consumer websites are doing a good job of adopting standards to reduce on-line fraud.  The survey was conducted between March and April and examined 1,200 websites and 500 million emails which came from those sites.  Included in the study were Fortune 500 companies, top Internet retailers, and federal government web sites.

An honor roll was established for companies that are free of malware and free of links to sites containing malware.  The honor roll companies also have extended validation SSL certificates, used to scramble or encrypt sensitive data transmitted during on-line transactions.

At 14%, the 500 top Internet retail sites had the highest percentage on the OTA honor roll.   At 3%, the federal government sites were the worst.

Well-represented on the honor roll were Silicon Valley technology companies.  Making the list were Apple Inc., Cisco Systems Inc., Symantec Corp., eBay Inc., and PayPal.

This study reflects the on-going need for anti-virus and anti-malware protection for your business.  CCS Retail Systems can provide you with this protection and answer any questions you have about the security of your system.  Give us a call at 800-672-4806 or email us.
