Signage – Your Silent Salespeople

One of the most important (and least expensive) sales and marketing tools you can use in your place of business is signage. Signage not only increases sales, but also increases customer enjoyment of the shopping experience. It answers the customer’s question, “Is this something I might want to buy?” without having to locate a salesperson.

Good signage can turn browsers into buyers, according to Whizbang! Training. Item signs – those small signs about a single item or group of items – placed next to the product, act as mini in-store advertisements, providing information to customers who may be too shy to ask questions.

Signs can also show features, hidden benefits, or outstanding values, making the product more attractive to customers. Also, signs can draw attention to merchandise that you are eager to sell in a timely way, like seasonal products.

In designing your signs, keep in mind the following pointers that will make your signs not just functional, but great!

Make sure your signs are uncomplicated and easy to read. Choose one font style for your headlines and a coordinating one for sign content. Keep font style, size, and color consistent for all your signs. A colorful border can be used to “dress up” a sign for a holiday.

Be sure to choose ink and paper colors with high contrast. White is usually good for a background color. If you do choose a colored background, stick with black text for greater visibility.

Be sure to have a benefit headline for every sign. This can be a discounted sale price or mention of a specific feature, as “this paint is guaranteed for 10 years!”

Add a picture and a price to show exactly which merchandise the sign is for.

Use sturdy, good-looking sign holders. This prevents undue wear and tear on signs.

Once you have your signage in place, you might want to think about how your receipts and labels look. A good POS System, like NCR’s Counterpoint, provides features that will allow you to apply some of these same design ideas to make your receipts and labels impressive!
