drop in the use of voice messaging systems
In a recent article by Erika Morphy for TechNewsWorld, it was reported that a sharp drop in the use of voice messaging systems, down 8% from July, 2011 compared to July, 2012, may indicate that this technology may eventually become obsolete. A number of reasons may explain why this is happening, according to Janet Sternberg, an assistant professor of media studies at Fordham University. Among them are the following:
Text messaging – This alternative technology is readily available, a convenience that many prefer over voice messaging.
Younger people are losing interest in conversing – Having grown up with texting and email, they are losing social skills. Many just don’t know how to start and stop a conversation, and that feels awkward for them. Not only that, but discomfort comes from knowing that voice messages can be played over and over again.
Many voice messages are mobile – Often they take place in public and outdoor locations, leaving them vulnerable to eavesdropping. Texting is more private.
Although the trend appears to be in a downward slide, voice messaging may not completely die away. Remember how television was predicted to end movie theaters? And how social media would kill email? In both cases, it didn’t happen. Technology is ever-changing. It’s up to us to decide how the technology works best for our needs. Perhaps a quick, “I’ll be a little late” text message will work best for short messages, but voice mail will be better for a more detailed communication.
