TempDB and SQL performance

MS-SQL Performance Tip

It your server has more than one physical disk, there is a simple change that you can make to help your MS-SQL server performance.

If you move the working database, tempdb, to a different drive than your SQL data files reside on, the disk load is shared when tempdb is being used.  How much performance improves depends on how heavily tempdb is being used.

Your queries will use tempdb if they use cursors, or temporary tables.  If these are heavily used, then moving tempdb will have a greater positive impact on performance.

Additionally, setting the minimum size of tempdb to be greater than the size it typically will expand to, will help performance too.  With this configuration, MS-SQL does not have to auto-increase tempdb when needed, and then auto-shrink when it releases resources.
