Record Spending Predicted
Despite current high gas prices, consumers are expected to go “all out” on spending to make sure that Mom’s special day is perfect. According to Kathy Grannis, in an article for National Retail Federation titled Gas Prices No Match When it Comes to Mom, the latest survey results from BIGinsight predicts record spending. Up from last year’s per person average spending of $140.73, this year’s per person average spending will be $152.52.
As this is one of the most important retail holidays of the year, promotions ahead of the event will abound for such items as clothing, flowers, electronics, restaurant meals, outings, and personal services such as a trip to a day spa.
An estimated $2.2 billion dollars will be spent on flowers, $1.6 billion dollars on clothing and accessories, another $1.6 billion dollars on tablets, digital cameras and other electronic devices, and, amazingly, nearly $1.8 billion dollars will be spend on gift cards!
Not surprisingly, an increasing number of mobile and tablet owners are expected to use their devices to research products, compare prices, redeem coupons, and purchase gift items. Many consumers will use these devices to seek out retailer information such as store location and store hours.
