Library of Congress to preserve Twitter posts.
Twitter is donating it’s archives of tweets to the Library of Congress, for all tweets going back the first one posted by Twitters co-founder, dated March 21, 2006.
The Library of Congress wants to give researchers a better way to revisit discussions of significant events including the 2008 US Presidential Election, the protests in Iran last year, and major earthquakes in Haiti, Chile, and elsewhere.
These archives will only include tweets that were meant for public viewing.
However, there is one other limitation, in that the Library of Congress won’t be able to offer access to specific tweets until six months after they are posted. This means that the archive will be billions of tweets behind the current 55 million daily tweets that Twitter says it’s now processing.
